Star Wars: The Next Generation

Disney has bought Lucasfilm for 4.05 Billion Dollars, has the dark side won or is this Star Wars' "Next Generation" moment?

The quote from George Lucas is very inspiring to me.

"For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next," he said. "It's now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I've always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime. I'm confident that with Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy, and having a new home within the Disney organization, Star Wars will certainly live on and flourish for many generations to come. Disney's reach and experience give Lucasfilm the opportunity to blaze new trails in film, television, interactive media, theme parks, live entertainment, and consumer products."

What we are witnessing is George planning his retirement, and one of his pressing concerns is who will be the guardian of his child Star Wars? George will be 70 when the planned "Star Wars VII" is released in 2015 and it is very clear that he wants the franchise to outlive him. Star Wars is his legacy, from the almost grass roots production in '77 to the billion dollar empire it has become there is no denying the cultural impact of Star Wars. The Disney giant is poised to add this legacy to its already impressive portfolio of Pixar, The Muppets, and Marvel. While there are thousands of questions swirling between Star Wars fans and Disney fans about the implications of this merger I believe it is a new hope for the franchise, and I'll tell you why.

Time for Time Travel Talk

Time travel is a fascinating subject considering its impossibility due to the laws of physics (punks). While we are "all" time travelers in a sense, moving forward at a rate of 1:1 just doesn't have the same excitement as mixing it up and jumping through time like its a water park slide. I am quite a movie fanatic and a good portion of my collection deal with time travel in one way or the other. Upon gazing across the DVD's I began to notice there were patterns between these different takes on impossibility. While new methods of time travel storytelling are always popping up, the classics fall into a few categories worth discussing. Note: Much of the discussion below involves plot spoilers.

Sci-Fi Stars Part 1 - Star Trek: The Next Generation

Space. Ships. Stars.Traveling among the stars has always been a staple of science fiction. Some of the best sci-fi even centers its title around the word "star." I will be exploring several examples that fit this criteria. Several bloggers are using this week's anniversary of Star Trek: The Next Generation to report about their experience with the legendary show. So it is a fitting starting point that I recant my own tales and adventures surrounding ST:TNG.

Space Shuttle Endeavour Travel Itinerary from Florida to California

Ever since NASA announced the final homes for the four remaining space shuttles I have been ecstatic about Endeavour's trip out to California. Endeavour will be on display in the Samuel Oschin Space Shuttle Endeavour Display Pavilion, at the California Science Center beginning October 30, 2012. I can only imagine the amount of engineering and planning it will take to guide the shuttle along the city streets with it's tail hight of 58 feet and wingspan of 78 feet.
